Mohács Busójárás Carnival
(February)
The annual Busójárás Carnival takes over Mohács from "Greasy Thursday" to "Shrove Tuesday." On the Sunday before Lent legendary busó parade fills the streets with Croation mummers: revellers in truly scary masks, covered in long pelts and waving torches.
According to legend, 17th-century locals pretended to be animals, dressing up in hideous masks and costumes to frighten away occupying Turkish forces. Nowadays reputed to be the circus capital of Europe, Budapest hosts the International Circus Festival at the city's Capital Circus. The event comes around only once every two years, making it a huge draw for big top enthusiasts.
The exciting range of acts will be competing in front of an international jury made up of well known representatives of the profession, making it an eagerly awaited and prestigious event for circus professionals and their spectators.
